Isn't it liberating, "breaking the rules".?...well, in the sense of not using a tripod for macros, it is for me at any rate.
The Tamron(I know, I'll shut up about this lens soon) does not have too pleasing a, er, bokeh when used as a portait lens..a bit harsh.
Even at a foot or so(sorry, I still measure in old money..) there are the sort of "doughnut" highlights you used to see in 1970s mirror-tele journalists' shots...
...but getting down to around 6 inches or less, things smooth out considerably, so that the creaminess starts to resemble something like the 50mm f1.4(my only real framework of reference, as I only have 4 lenses).
So, handheld, and on the same day as the others, during a walk in the woods and on the common:
Aperture priority for all shots.
1/160s, f4, 400 ISO
1/320s, f4, 400 ISO
1/200s, f4, 200 ISO
1/640, f3.5, 100 ISO
