Bali - Transport (18 pics)
#1

This is the final group of photos from my Bali trip, focusing on the very inventive and sometimes downright dangerous ways the Balinese use their roads, vehicles and transport systems.
Whenever I caught a taxi I kept my camera on my lap ready for a shot. Many of these shots are the result.

1. Full-size petrol stations are few and far between, but fuel can be bought for scooters from many small shops.

2. It's common to see an entire family on a scooter.

3. People would carry bikes with them on scooters, or ladders, or even loose chickens!

4. The passenger carrying the billboard on the back of this scooter has no vision at all of where they were going as this scooter weaved through traffic (it came from behind where I was standing).

5. This rider lifts his legs as he rides through a puddle so as not to get wet.

6. We were in a taxi stopped at traffic lights. The road is only two lanes wide in our direction, yet dozens of scooter manage to squeeze in.

7. Who needs a scooter?

8. It takes more than a bit of rain to get bikes off the road.

9. If you're a female passenger wearing a sarong, you have to ride side-saddle to keep your modesty.

10. Even transporting things on foot showed skill and inventiveness.

11. It seems their window-tinting laws aren't very strict...

12. ...or any of their road laws for that matter!

13. This guy was riding a very cool double-jointed bike.

14. It never ceased to amaze me how much could be carried on a scooter.

15. These guys were loading chickens into this truck by throwing them. hard.

16. This man was selling piglets from his scooter.

17. I saw this scooter in the carpark of the temple at Lake Bratan.

18. Riding in the rain.

And to think that couples here buy a minivan as soon as they have their first child, or a six-ton SUV for the daily commute into the city.

Thanks for the photos and the stories -- I've greatly enjoyed all of your series.

Brilliant Adrian.
The guy in #4 with the board, seems to be saying to the other scooter rider, "watch where you are going".

Brings back so many memories from 14 years ago. Love the last one - but they are all great.
