- Leccinum scabrum This edible mushroom is only to be found in association with the birch tree - hence the name. It can be found throughout Europe and most of the Northern hemisphere.

I wonder what ties it to the birch, maybe a quality in the earth from the birch bark and leaves etc. Good Capture.

Hi Bob, it involves the symbiotic relationship between the roots of the birch tree and the mycorrhiza of the fungus. There are many such instances where fungi are assoiated with particular tree species. The moss covered trunk base to the right is of a silver birch,.
Not all symbiotic relationships are mutually beneficial.
