Challenge 2012 June: SMALL
#1

The theme for the June photo challenge is SMALL.

How you interpret that is completely up to you – there's a whole world of the very tiny available with the right equipment, but even very big things can be small. Be creative and have fun. While there are no right or wrong ways to interpret the theme, how well your photograph captures it will be considered in the judging.

For the CHALLENGE: You may enter up to three photos. The original images must have been recorded within the past year, meaning on or after 1 June 2011.

To submit an entry to be considered for judging, post it in this thread. You are also encouraged to post experimental, fun, or other thematically-appropriate photos here, so please indicate whether each one is for the competition or for more casual enjoyment. If that's not clear, then the judge(s) will be fed the last three photos posted by each person.

Thanks, everyone, and if anything's unclear, or if there are any questions, let me know!

Hi all, apologies for being late with the announcement of the prizes etc. - I'm still waiting on the sponsor to confirm. I do have some backups so don't worry but I will give them until the end of the week to respond.

Nevertheless, do get your entries in... all the best and have fun! Big Grin

Hi all, I apologise for this late response - the sponsor that I had verbally lined up for this month did not come through in a timely manner, and they are now slated for July. However, I do have a backup prize which I will have to use for this month's challenge -

1 x Zenfolio Unlimited Plan (12 months of free membership, worth $50 USD)
Will be awarded to the winner of the challenge, as decided by Matthew.
Zenfolio is a photo and video hosting service, and is the ultimate destination to present your photos and video clips online. The Unlimited Plan allows unlimited storage, high definition video hosting, and the ability to use your own domain name to point to your gallery.
More details on Zenfolio here:
http://www.zenfolio.com/zf/ovr-ent/overview.aspx

Once again I hope you have fun on this challenge - make sure you get your entries in by the 21st!

I do humbly apologise again for the stuff up, and I will endeavour to sort out the sponsors well in advance, before each challenge begins in future.

A real close-up of a dandelion - much closer than 1:1 (used extension rings with a macro set to 1:1) - hand-held (!!!)

I hope you guys will make it into a tough competition with many entries

Flickr/help/photos: Wrote:The HTML code to embed a photo in a web page that you used to find on the All Sizes page is now only in the Share menu above the photo, to the right of the Actions menu. We now also include BBCode! (standard message board code)

There are a few cases where the code may not be available: 1) If the photo is restricted. 2) If that person has turned off "Share this" or access to original files.

The direct link to a photo file is no longer shown on the page. Per the Flickr Community Guidelines "pages on other websites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr." Linking directly to the photo file doesn't do this.

My take on the 'Lonely Tree' – something made small by a big space.

Beats the Lonely Tree preset Matthew. Lonely lamppost I am not yet sick of. Please do not post more than a dozen Lonely lampposts a year.

Entry Deadline Extended!

I have some commitments coming up for the end of this week, so I'll be offline from Thursday, 21 June to Tuesday, 26 June. So the deadline to enter photos for the judged portion of the challenge – with the prize of a one-year unlimited Zenfolio account – will be midnight on the 25th of June-ish.

This means that there will be a quick turn-around between this month's challenge and the next, but I think we're up to it. Big Grin

Remember: you may submit up to three photos taken any time during the past year.

Thanks, all!

Last call, everyone!

This month's challenge will stop accepting entries in just a few more hours. Pavel's dandelion photo is great, but the judges can be capricious, so let's give them something to talk about.

Here is my second entry to give my first some competition. I wish some more good photographers from this group gave me a run for it.[Image: 7444666548_03f26235a4_z.jpg]

Hey Pavel, just checked it and I think you can't use it here because you may have disabled sharing on your photo in flickr

Thanks Julian, I am not really computer savvy and and I am just groping my way in the dark. Thanks again. By the way, I still have no communication from anybody (but you) about the prize. I am looking forward to seeing your photos from Fiji. Sounds like a great place to visit.

Take care

Pavel

And the results are in!

The judges were unanimous this month – Pavel's "Wind and Space" was their pick for the winner of the Small challenge. They singled out the creative and clear interpretation of the theme, pleasing colour palette, and strong composition. While the "dandelion up close" is powerful photo and a technically excellent image, the judges ultimately preferred the quieter, more contemplative and – their word – story of "Wind and Space".

Thanks, Pavel – great shots, as always.

Great and thank you, although I would have preferred to win (or place) against a much more numerous entries. One of the strengths of this group is a number of excellent photographers. Where are you guys?

Congrats Pavel, Wind and Space is a really strong image - I love it! I know it would have been nice not to win by default, but I think it would have held its own were there more entries. Big Grin

I'll send you the details of the prize via email. Did the other one from Totally Rad get sorted out?

Time ran out for me. I had numerous hospital visits and things to get ready for a five day trip to London. Now I am back and raring to go. Written on I-Pod Touch.

I had to go for my ears dewaxing or the hearing aid wont work and then I got conjunctivitis to go with sticky eyes Cool then the hearing aid started being dodgy so had to go get that fixed. Now I am getting another one for the other ear. (Stereo comes to NT). Of course that was on top of smashing my big toe against the bath panel while shaking the leg of my trousers to get them over my heel. Confused
So I missed out on 'SMALL' Apart from that, how do you compete with a $xxxxx million camera. Big Grin

Well done Pavel.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties – I can certainly appreciate that sometimes life has other things in mind. But the good news is that time hasn't run out in that final sense: we have a challenge running for July as well. Angel

Step one: Find an appealing subject in attractive light and photograph it in an interesting way.

Step two: Submit.
