Colour Popping means taking an image and copying it as a greyscale on top of the coloured one. Then erasing through the greyscale layer to show the coloured bits beneath.

The software is Corel's "Paint Shop Pro"
It's a lot cheaper than Photo Shop but does more or less the same stuff.
There are no masks needed,
Just copy the image, Greyscale it, then paste the greyscale image back on top of the coloured one as a new layer.
Then use the eraser to bring the colour through where you need to.
Then flatten the layers back to a single one.
Or the technical way .....
Open an image, go to the Hue and Saturation and take the Saturation down as far as it will go.
Then use the programs brush to paint back the coloured parts.
I used to have Paintshop pro when I used a Windows PC but had to change over to PS when I bought a Mac. The only downside of having a Mac. However, you must have a steady hand, unless Paintshop pro has edge aware brushes and erasers.

You can't be too old for 'what is photography' discussion. Besides, since the technology is moving fast forward there is always something new to add to that one, so you can't even get bored
(kidding, hope everyone understand that even without me saying it out loud but had to say it just to avoid misunderstandings as this is quite a serious topic for somes)

No that’s not the forte. Seeing the twig and avoiding it is the aim. Cloning and cropping is the long stop when you get back to your PC and say "****** I didn’t see that!"
