First Fogo Island shots with new camera!
#1

Hi all,

I finally got outside with my new Sony A200 DSLR and gave it a bit of a workout. The conditions weren't ideal (I hate harsh midday light!) but I can safely say that I am VERY impressed with this camera! I never thought noise was much of an issue with the Sony H50, but with this one there is no noise to speak of, at least not in these captures. The real test will be the late evening sunsets.

The funny thing is, this is the dreaded kit lens that everyone (well, most people) complains profusely about, saying it is basically junk and should not even be used. I read many complaints about corner softness, and basically not a sharp lens. Well if this is what is called a cr*p lens, I can hardly wait to see what my Minolta Maxxum 35-70mm F/4 / macro is capable of. (excellent condition, 70 bucks on Ebay) I hope to have it delivered in a day or two. It would have to be pretty spectacular to beat this kit lens, I think. Had I known ahead of time that it was far from being junk, I might not have even considered the Minolta lens.
It is worth noting that this camera and lens cost me $150 less than the Sony HX1.

The drawback for me, and likely a temporary one, is that I am so accustomed to the feel of the H50 and H7, that this thing feels like a brute; very heavy, large and awkward to hold on to, but I am sure I will get used to it in time. Sure, I miss the zoom of the H50, and the tilt screen (though I seldom use it) but that's OK, because I HAVE the H50.
These were shot hand held in RAW.

Glen, I love the first shot, but all three are really strong.

Keith also uses an Alpha, so perhaps he'll have some insight into the lenses. But in my general experience, most 'kit' lenses are actually pretty good under most conditions. Photography and camera-buying are two separate hobbies, so don't worry about what other people say about your equipment, just listen to what they say about your photos.

I've always considered the A200 to be a small camera... Big Grin
