I don't think that this photo is a good candidate for conversion to black and white/monochrome. I'll bet some interesting information would be evident in the colour version. I think that the upper part of the image is too contrasty and lacking in detail I also think that the picture loses some of its charm as a quaint (old fashioned) fishing village with the very evident electrical poles and wires ...not your fault. I do like the manner in which the dramatic waves match the brooding cloudy sky. A huge difference in lighting the sky light from left to right. Looks like a storm was passing through.

I think you are right Dennis. After reading your critique, I do not like this photo much either. Thanks. pavel

While Dennis is tehcnically correct, I like the loss of detail. It adds an air of mystery, as if Normal Bates could appear at any moment. I'd like a slight tilt correction though.

I try not to critique a photo the first time I see it, so please excuse my being a little tardy on this one. I also try not to read the other responses until I'm clear in my own mind about an image, so forgive me if I'm repeating what others have said.

Looking at it a second time, I'm stuck by how the darkening sky matches the tones in the buildings as they progress across the scene. Even the white buildings at the very end of the row aren't out of place, as they're completely offset by the black land behind them which continues the progression. Add the interesting wave action to the foreground, and there's a lot to look at. It's not a Pretty photo, but it's interesting, and I'll take that over Pretty any day.

Technically, I'm not sure if it's a strong image, but I do find that it has a strong feeling to it. It is a little tilted, but I'd almost suggest exaggerating it instead of correcting it. (Almost.) It feels like a photo of somebody's home town rather than a tourist photo, and has more meaning and emotion to because it's not a stereotyped pretty scene. I can imagine this print, sepia-toned and dog-eared, having been carried day after day by someone's favourite uncle.
