I love mashups. If you don't know, they're where multiple songs (of any genre) are mixed together to produce a new song.

For examples:
pop rock x rock (Snow Patrol x The Police)

Leaves me cold I'm afraid. A new name for an old practice, that of simply(and quite illegally) sampling or barely copy/pasting bits of one track into any cheap sequencing software, along with another. A quick bounce-down by pressing the Export button, and job done.
Stealing, of course, is nothing new to we musicians and photographers, either by line, composition or idea...but the more brazen and talentless the act becomes, the more one's discernment could be brought out of hibernation:
Oddly enough, I saw yesterday some "re-shot"(or was it "reworked"?...) Terry Neil images, that are apparently going to be hung alongside the originals. The originals have hardly aged well...but for the "reworker" to have just taken the original image and done a bit of Shopping on it, takes the mick and is just a case of the Emperor's New Clothes.
OK, it's a wee bit of fun in both cases but above all an example of being piggybacked up a mountain to then claim one did the climb themselves.
(I do it all the time in some form or another...just with a few more arcane sources...! I just make sure it's not all I do).

I thought mashups, were potatoes, cabbage and carrot left overs - fried. Very tasty. Big Grin

So even the language is being "sampled". Rolleyes

I don't see anything wrong with sampling if you're doing it for fun and to be creative, while not making any money.

I don't really have a problem with mashups. They don't detract from the market of the original singer/band, and they're all in the spirit of good fun. Some sampled musicians object, though, and that's totally their right - if you get a complaint from the artist, you deep six the track - plenty of other samples to be worked with.

I think that's the great thing about mashups, so many tracks to work with. I would be like a kid in a candy shop trying to choose them.

I don't make them either. I've tried but I prefer just some mixing (for fun). Traktor DJ Studio 3 for the PC is great for playing around with.

Once you start uploading and sharing them, whether for profit or not, it is then infringing the original artists copyright.
