Nikon EN-EL3 Battery Recall
#1

*sniff sniff* just two weeks with my new toy and a recall... haha. Good thing it's nothing major... Big Grin

Got this in my inbox today...

Quote:Dear Valued Nikon Customer

Nikon has announced a Voluntary Recall and Replacement Program for certain Nikon
EN-EL3 lithium-ion batteries for Nikon Digital-SLR cameras (Nikon Coolpix owners
can safely ignore the remainder of this email).

It has come to our attention that some Rechargeable Li-ion Batteries EN-EL3 for
Nikon digital-SLR cameras may, on rare occasions, overheat causing the battery
to become deformed or, in the worse case, to catch fire. Nikon has received
notification of 4 cases of such batteries worldwide but has decided to implement
a voluntary recall and replacement program.

The EN-EL3 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery is a lithium-ion battery for USE with
Nikon D100, D70, D70S, and D50 digital-SLR cameras. Among these 4 models, it
is SUPPLIED with purchase of the D100, D70, and D50. In the interest of our
customers' safety, we have, as mentioned earlier, decided to implement a
voluntary recall and replacement program. Customers with recalled batteries
should request a replacement battery as indicated below. We sincerely apologise
for any inconvenience this issue may cause you.

1. Your Battery
? If your EN-EL3 has a 4-digit production lot number listed in the table below
your battery IS subject to this recall. Please remove the battery immediately
from your camera and discontinue use.

? EN-EL3 production lot numbers can be found in the centre groove on the bottom
(surface covered by the terminal cover) of the battery (tilt the battery so that
the light shines directly on the groove to see the lot number).

Note: If the production lot number of your EN-EL3 is not among those in the list
of recalled lot numbers, or if your rechargeable battery is an EN-EL3a or an
EN-EL3e, your battery is NOT affected by this recall. This recall also excludes
any third party batteries which do not bear the Nikon brand or EN-EL3 model
number.

Uh oh... another recall for overheating batteries...

Might just get a free battery after all!

Quote:Amsterdam, December 6th, 2005 - As announced on November 8th, 2005, Nikon has detected that on rare occasions some rechargeable Li-ion batteries of the type EN-EL3 for Nikon Digital SLR cameras may become defective, resulting in overheating during recharging. In the worst case, Nikon cannot rule out the possibility that the battery could catch fire as a result of the defect. The rechargeable Li-ion EN-EL3 battery is provided as a supplied accessory with the Nikon D100, D70 and D50 Digital SLR cameras. It is also sold as a separate accessory for these camera models and can be used with the Nikon D70s.

Owners of the Nikon cameras D100, D70 and D50 and users of the Li-ion battery EN-EL3 are asked to carefully recheck their batteries as additional batch numbers were included into the list of possibly defective batteries.

The additional batch numbers are 51AA, 51AB, 51AC, 51AD, 51AE, 51AF, 51AG, 51AH, 53AA, 53AB, 54AE, 54AF, 54AH.

Batteries that are affected can be found in the list below and should be returned to Nikon for replacement. Customers should follow the on-line procedure described at www.europe-nikon.com/support. Assistance with completing the procedure can be obtained by calling Nikon on the dedicated national number +44 (0)2871 305 500. Qualifying returned EN-EL3 batteries will be replaced with a new EN-EL3a or EN-EL3e free of charge.

The voluntary recall and replacement program applies only to units of the model EN-EL3 bearing the following batch numbers, which are printed on the surface of the battery.

Yay, I received my replacement battery today!

They gave me a EN-EL3a, which is 1500 mah vs 1400 mah.

Now I've got a higher capacity battery, and another backup battery (in case of emergencies)! Big Grin
