I think it works somewhat... but his face, hair etc. still looks too clean and clean cut to me.

There are elements that I really like - such as the right side and the top left corner. I also like the hand holding the pipe. I don't care for the T-shirt and face.
Some alternate crops might have you onto a real winner, here, C. BTW: like your signature.

Darn fine image...I wonder if the tightness of crop on his head might be accentuating any "issues" with the face? That said, is there a merest tad of over-dodging on the face and shirt logo, or is this just me?

Ooo...just had a thought overnight: I'm wondering if doing the whole image from scratch as a monochrome would help, using a blue filter to add darker flesh tones?

Technically, I think its a very good pic. It just isnt homely enough, no troubles here. It looks like an add for Sun Life or Ford Trucks.
