I've found that a common complaint is that photographers are often expected to work for free - for close friends.

Professional implies the only answer necessary. A professional gets paid for his/hers work as they are providing a professional service. Ask a lawyer for a break because you're poor or will spread his name around. How'd you think that'd work for you.
