Robin
#1

This robin and her mate are flitting round my garden at the moment: they've nested in my hedge and are constantly doing a circular tour of duty like 2 hands of a watch moving round at speed, snapping away at whatever edible life forms they can in order top feed the bottomless mouths of their offspring.
I thought I'd try a bird shot from my deck chair in the sun..and seeing as the robins are such cheeky opportunists, I just sat about with the long end of the 70-200, I.S. dialled in along with focus tracking. Of course, any movement I made seemed to announce to the critter that I was digging up another worm(!); I just waited till she alighted on the clematis which I've got growing up the oak tree, focused on the eye and snapped. Blessedly, she decided to cock her head quizzically at the right time...I just wish humans were that natural!
EXIF is: 200mm, 1/50th sec at f9: I know, I could have maximised my chances by opening up a bit, but you can see how well the Image Stabilisation and focus tracking work..and it's a snap of course.

I prefer red robins to B&W robins. As around the rugged rock .........Tongue

Incidentally they adore mealworms (live ones) Which are similar to fishing maggots. Both my wife and I have had them eating from our hands. Takes a couple of days or so, for them to be sure of you.

Great top see the comparison with the B&W. Strangely (after my comments) I prefer the B&W. Can't win, I suppose...

Good man Toad!
Actually, I really found your and Irma's comments on high-key very useful, which helped me to nip back to the colour one and get it in a way more concommitant to the character of the bird: whilst not strictly high-key per se, I did the raw conversion at low contrast, dodging highlights and trying to mirror things like thr robin's flitting elusivity. This one is the final one, as follows:
