Steam
#1

This is from the steam railway museum in Swindon, Wiltshire(UK)...or more precisely, from the footplate of the Caerphilly Castle steam locomotive that resides there. Enthusiasts and societies are gaining much success in keeping many of these old steam trains running on local lines....the museums seem to be run almost exclusively by volunteers who merely state they find it such a privilege to be there at all. A really special set of people, this.
Shooting conditions were interesting: indoors with varied lighting sources like tungsten, diffused daylight, wide expanses of dark metal with other wide expanses of glass roofs.
I made the error of not taking a tripod: mercifully the 21mm is sharp across all zones at f2.8 but this was not ideal. As it was, I was maxed out here: f2.8, ISO 1600, giving a shutter speed of 1/25s...only just under the wire in other words.

A bit noisy but very neat

Nikon D3100 with Tokina 28-70mm f3.5, (I like to use a Vivitar .43x aux on the 28-70mm Tokina), Nikkor 10.5 mm fisheye, Quanteray 70-300mm f4.5, ProOptic 500 mm f6.3 mirror lens. http://donschaefferphoto.blogspot.com/

Its a lovely image - full of fine detail and Steampunk richness. I like this sort of thing a lot. Color noise on the fringe of usability in the dark patch at the top left. Honestly though, we make too much about low light - high ISO performance these days - its become the new MPX war among camera manufacturers. In the old days, we used ISO 400 (maybe 800), it was noisy as hell and we were happy to get it...

I'd got rid of the ISO noise once but of course as soon as I dodge to get some highlights back, this is the thing that degrades my high ISO images. Noise on a full-frame sensor in a shot that is websized, shouldn't be an issue. I confess I do like a bit of noise on mono shots: gives that push-processed feel.
