This is a Northern Shrike Jeff - a predatory songbird that breeds in taiga and tundra and winters in southern Canada and the northern United States.

Hi John Thanks for info - well, bless me, I've seen the great grey shrike and the red backed shrike this year along the Danube and the great grey shrike has been seen this week here in Worcestershire. John, more birds, please! Jeff

Good shot well taken! I live in Calgary... would this bird be local to me? I will keep a look out ...

There should be this time of year - this species prefers forest edges , open willow brush and brush-bordered swamps and bogs .
