I agree that getting a prime lens is a must, but sadly you can't use the camera as you would a normal one. For instance, I was in a museum recently with my 35mm and, while it would take amazing pictures, they could only capture a bit of the whole room - many times that was simply not enough.

Yes, the problem with primes is, of course, that one is not enough. The 35mm is the APSC camera's equivalent of the standard lens of the old 35mm film cameras, so what is really needed would be also a wide-angle prime and a telephoto prime, to make up a simple DSLR system.

Here is a photo of the mansion at Wrest Park in Bedfordshire, taken last year, using a Pentax 21mm (wide-angle) prime lens on a Pentax K-5. It was a single colour image, converted to monochrome and cropped to 2:1 format in PaintShop Pro X4:
