Ok further to my research with a cuppa n bickie i found that the previous stick is better suited for compact cameras, this how ever is for either the compact or slr.

both still very reasonable. Smile

I carry a chainpod, hot in the 60's. Piece of chain, about your height, plus a couple of feet, with camera tripod screw on end. Attach to camera, let chain fall to ground, stand on it, and pull up slightly. Ed.

But for those of us who hike back in the wood on old logging and mining roads a hiking stick is still helpful and as long as you have a stick it might as well serve a dual purpose as a mono pod and a hike sticking stick as well .... but I still might try that chain pod also just have to find a pocket on my photo bag that does not have anything in it.

I've seen a number of variations. This one looks very nice.
You can make your own by mounting a 3/8 inch (tripod) screw on a dowel. Make a hole in a rubber foot pad to mount the screw. There are instructions on line someplace.

Nikon D3100 with Tokina 28-70mm f3.5, (I like to use a Vivitar .43x aux on the 28-70mm Tokina), Nikkor 10.5 mm fisheye, Quanteray 70-300mm f4.5, ProOptic 500 mm f6.3 mirror lens. http://donschaefferphoto.blogspot.com/
