I bought a cheap set of extension tubes on e-bay. To try it I mounted put the adapter ring onto my Sigma 18-200 mm lens. The rings screw into the adapter. Now I can't get the adapter off. There is no visible lever or button to release it. Does anyone know what to do?

After I figured out how to un-attach the ring from the lens, I tried it. Of course the extension rings really reduce light input. I needed my speedlight to illuminate the subjects. It was also very hard to see well enough to focus. But on some elementary easy subjects I got some interesting results. Here three rings (about 1 3/8 inches of extension) were used.
The fingernail of a painter
Fingerprint
Dead Leaf
The Spent Stamen

Cool shots, Don! I'm always amazed that I don't do more macro shooting - its a crazy world down there. Special kudos for 3 and 5.

I cant tell you how relieved I was as I scrolled down and realised that you hadn't been taking pictures of raw sides of pork!! A finger nail. Phew!! What a steady hand.
I love extension rings. If you know how to calculate the effect each one will have on particular lenses - could you drop in a reply please? I cannot get my head around them and end up just swapping them around till I get the effect I want. Possibly not the best approach!!

Well I sold the Sigma lens and stopped using rings. I bought a couple of macro type lenses which work much better plus a magnifying lens and a macro camera.

The adapter rings I've got have a small button where it attaches to the lens, this is attached to a pin which locks into the lens. To release pull the button away from the lens. If the button has unscrewed then there will be a small slot with a hole at the bottom, using a pin you can ease the locking pin on the holder out of the lens. Hope this helps
Happy new year
