a couple from Juanita Bay this afternoon...
pied-billed grebe... they usually don't come in close enough to give me a decent shot, but today they were feeling generous...
just a song sparrow, but i liked the light and the pose...
loved the reflected light on this little lady ring-neck...

I think the reflection in #3 is just too smooth.
Nikon D3100 with Tokina 28-70mm f3.5, (I like to use a Vivitar .43x aux on the 28-70mm Tokina), Nikkor 10.5 mm fisheye, Quanteray 70-300mm f4.5, ProOptic 500 mm f6.3 mirror lens. http://donschaefferphoto.blogspot.com/

that's an interesting observation, Don... this shot is SOOC except for resizing and sharpening...

Polarising filter?
In no way doubting you. The first one shows little water effects left and right of the reflected image, where as in the third although the water looks choppier than the first photo, there are no little lines either side.
Putting that to one side the three shots are quality.

nope, no filters were used for these shots. they were taken about an hour - and some distance - apart, and clearly in different light. the first was shot in sunlight at about 6 PM, and the second as the sun was setting, at about 7:00.
as for the ripples, in the first one, as you can see, the grebe is actively moving, creating a wake, while in the last one, there's no such movement to create those ripples. had the grebe been at rest, there would've been no ripples whatsoever, as the water was flat calm, but in the hour or so between shots, a slight breeze came up, just enough to create the wavy appearance on the surface.

Thats what I am saying, ripples on the water create a wavy surface, but not on the birds reflection which is reflected by the water surface.
Like I said I am not doubting you. Still, stranger things happen.

i understand what you're saying... but i shot a dozen or more frames of that duck from slightly different angles over a period of about 5 minutes, and none of them exhibit any ripples in the reflection. even viewed at 100%, the reflection has no ripples in it. here's a crop from the original SOOC image file showing a portion of the image at 100% size...
