2nd is definitely appears sharper and appears to have greater detail.

I have been trying in the meantime... getting better but can't get a picture as sharp as yours yet. First I slightly changed brightness/contrast (using photoshop CS): Then I used unsharp mask: Result:

I have not bothered blurring the background which you seem to have done with good result. I assume you had to manually select (or deselect) the object?
