Hey, just spotted this - Mozilla (the same people who brought you firefox) have released a technology preview of Songbird, an open source iTunes clone that doesn't lock you into using just Apple's store.

Instead of connecting to one locked store full of DRMmed goods, it can connect to any and all available music (and video) on the internet.

Built on the same platform as Firefox, Songbird acts like a specialized web browser for music. It sees the online world through MP3-colored glasses -- it looks at an archive of public domain sound files or a music store's catalog, and displays available media for you.

I haven't tried it yet, but it sure looks like iTunes to me! Even the placement of the panes, buttons and playlist looks the same...


I hope this one takes off - I really love mozilla firefox - let's hope the same mojo will rub off on it...
