I saw a pattern composed of paving stones as part of a sidewalk in a village known as Unionville. The stones had been heaved and displaced somewhat by frost and weather, I suspect. I hope my bit of "enhancement" made the pattern a little more interesting.....Dennis

Nice abstract

Nikon D3100 with Tokina 28-70mm f3.5, (I like to use a Vivitar .43x aux on the 28-70mm Tokina), Nikkor 10.5 mm fisheye, Quanteray 70-300mm f4.5, ProOptic 500 mm f6.3 mirror lens. http://donschaefferphoto.blogspot.com/

I assume that this is your first B&W conversion Dennis. Congratualtions. This is not one of my favourite photos of yours for two reasons. One is technical. In photos of pattern and texture, a sense of sharpness and detail are important, but there the photo does not give me a sense of sharpness. My guess is long shutterspeed (nothing seems really in sharp focus) combined with shallow DOF, as the focus seems to run through the first third of the foreground.
My other issue is composition. I also like textures and paterns, but here nothing really holds your attention. Gary (Blowup) would also say "there is no mystery here", something he considers a definite plus in abstracts. (OK Gary, this is your chance to say that I do not get you at all).

That said, I see that you are experimenting, rather than staying with the themes you are more comfortable. I see that as very positive, even if not every experiment works out s intended. This is the place to try things out, so that your walls end up adorned with masterpieces. Pavel

Gary (Blowup) would also say "there is no mystery here"

I knew that one day, Pavel, speaking for Pavel, would not be enough, and then he would have to start speaking for others, too.Wink Dennis, there is, in fact, something that I find mysterious, here. That is what appears to be a curving bulge, whose edge runs in a sort of oval just inside the perimeter of the photo. Is this what you mean by
Quote:stones had been heaved and displaced
? This does not look like the sort of displacement caused by weather. The lower edge of this
Quote:bulge
(in the corners) looks really strange. It looks like the distortion caused by looking through a drop of water on a glass slide.

I agree with Pavel about the focus/sharpness issues. I think that there might also be an advantage to being farther away (i.e. higher) from the subject, in this case. But that depends on how wide the sidewalk is.

I agree that one should always keep experimenting.
Cheers, Gary

Hi, Gary! O.K. Here's the story... Near the end of our walk around, I took about 3 seconds to take the photo of the bumpy paving stones. The mosquitos were biting like crazy. I'm stlill scratching. Later, when reviewing the 50 images I had taken that morning, I found that most of them were really crappy...many overexposed for no explicable reason (to me at the time). I assume I didn't pay enough attention to proper metering that morning. No amount of Photoshopping could help much. It seemes that the stomes and the bubbles were the only shots I could play with. Using some filters, I attempted to enhance the natural heaving effect of the stones. I'm still exploring the very basics of the software.... about 40 pages of a 600 page manual. I can't wait to try layers.

In a few days we're off on vacation to Stratford, Ottawa and Mt. Tremblant in Quebec. Endless possibilities for photos in those places. Many thanks for your comments. Regards.....Dennis

Have a great trip. I am sorry you will miss Shuttertalk (Toronto Chapter) first meeting and so you will not be among the founding fathers, except perhaps in spirit. However I hope that there will be othe opportunities. Have a great holiday. I will see you when we are back from Portugal. Pavel
