Having to use the rear screen of a dslr for video is pretty awful. There are numerous versions of viewers to fit rear screens costing £300 upwards and none i find very practical. They can't be detached easily, are bulky and expensive.

I have an improvised one, cheap and light that folds down very small and when fitted flips up so you can access the rear of the camera.
Part of an old medium format camera i had years ago. I have riveted a piece of aluminum to it, hinged so it can flip up. It attaches to the camera hot shoe.

An eye piece also hand made from a scrap of aluminum and a some rubber wet-suite
attaches via Velcro.
I've been using it about 3 yrs and found it an indispensable video tool. It folds down very small to pack and eyepiece attaches quickly. I'm sure these old fold up viewers can be found on the net. Mine (mamiya) has removable lens. You could purchase a lens to suite your glasses.
I know it looks ragged, but it has withstood years of travel jim t

Don't know about you, but i'm allergic to humping a tripod. It's just too much trouble.
I use a sirui p-326 stick and found the extra handle very useful when using a tele or when doing video.
I have made a simple plastic handle that is very light (a few ounces) and anyone can do so if they wanted. It is a piece of cheap 1 and 1/2 inch (40mm) plumbing pipe from a hardware store. Cover with some glued on closed cell pvc foam.

You have to cut one end with a hacksaw, then heat and bend the plastic, filing it to shape to fit into your monopod head. Velcro glued to your handle and monopod will hold in firmly in position. If you make it a snug fit and buy a heavy grade of pvc it will not break or wobble.
I have found by placing foot of my stick a bit forward (so it leans to me slightly)
there is no forward or backward movement. Then using a pvc handle to stop lateral twist, you can hold long lenses or video very steady. It's also not much to carry.
My stick and handle both clip on the side of my camera pack when hoofing it.
I've also attached a pic of handy mike attachment to use on your stick. I works very well.. jim t

I don't know if any members are into video in the newer versions of dslr cameras.
They have been around for a while and lots of people have adapted their cameras for video. I've attached some images of my second attempt to make a stable hand held camera platform for video.
The aim is to be able to walk around and have the camera steady. Not so easy if you've tried. Video can be quite interesting when the camera is on the move.

I have used my stabilizer for videos as in: Outdoors walking around gardens, while walking up stairs, for walk through interiors of homes for sale.
(not practiced by uk photographers)
Fairly wide angle lenses are mostly used. They provide the best depth of field without having to refocus.
This stabilizer is at the end of its life and i'm making a simpler even better one based on a standard mono-pod and a weighted attachment that Velcros on.
Displayed gizmo is made of common aluminum extrusion (i scrounge alloy scrap bins)
Weights are common ones sold to divers and most of it is held together by common rubber o rings purchased at hardware store.

Weights are a problem when flying. I usually have them in my coat pockets to relieve baggage weight. I also used the canon xf100 video on this platform quite successfully.
Maybe other members have made similar gizmos.. Would like to hear from you if you have. jim t
Greetings!

I found out about your website while doing research on buying a new digital camera (I've had two different - what I would consider "point and shoot" - and am looking to step up to something more capable) and came across some information from "ShutterTalk". Am very excited to have found this site and hoping to learn and provide, where my meager skills/knowledge could come into play, information to the enhancing of my abilities and to the skills of others.

Especially would like to develop some astro-photography skills and start taking some serious pictures. I have a Meade telescope that will accommodate a DSLR and track celestial objects...it's not a high-end telescope but something that meets my needs. That is, if I can ever get the blasted motors to calibrate. Lol.

Well, again, greetings and looking forward to some healthy interaction.[email=chazbo82@zoominternet.net]
