Good post Ed... recently tried very hard to explain Point 3 to someone who complained their 100-400 4.5-5.6 stopped autofocusing when they put a x2 converter on it.... Difficult to explain the AF sensor and how the modes work and why that needs a certain amount of light apart from your shooting aperture!
