Wow - 2 really stunning photos! I love them both. Flash I assume? It does wonders fro eliminating background, if you need not wory about flat lighting

Please see my photos at http://mullerpavel.smugmug.com (fewer, better image quality, not updated lately)
or at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pavel_photophile2008/ (all photos)

These ARE really novel and wonderful. How did you do it?

Nikon D3100 with Tokina 28-70mm f3.5, (I like to use a Vivitar .43x aux on the 28-70mm Tokina), Nikkor 10.5 mm fisheye, Quanteray 70-300mm f4.5, ProOptic 500 mm f6.3 mirror lens. http://donschaefferphoto.blogspot.com/

I'd guess the answer to that is the combo of uncompromisingly mastering the tools and understanding light to externalise the vision.

Yes, what Zig said! Wink …..plus, just the right morning light (no flash) with a shadowy thicket in the distance to create the black background, 300 mm, f/5.6, 1/400, ISO 250, and knowing that both hummingbirds and dragonflies like to return to the same spot over and over, so just focusing on their spot and patiently waiting for them to return (usually doesn’t take very long). Thanks everyone.
