Hey just noticing that lead guitarists (on electric) hardly play any full chords, bar chords etc., and they're usually up the neck.
What chords are they using? Or are they just playing like a few strings?

It depends - one that use a fair bit is to play a 'D' shape on the 7th fret
Like so:
7
8
7
x
x
x
This is essentially a G-chord, but because it's in a higher register, it cuts through the mix quite well when playing with a full band (bass, drums, piano and rhythm guitar). In fact you could play that one chord through the whole of any song in the key of G!
Most other times, they're just playing more complex chords (Gmin9 add7 b5, hehehe) instead of the usual 2nd/3rd fret chords, and yes, they only play a few select strings.
