Compare cameras - test shots
#1

http://www.digitalversus.com check out different cameras, cell phones using different magnifications and lighting conditions. Excellent side by side comparissons, I think. Particularly great for cell phones. For example, compare I phone to Nokia - very telling.

Take care.

Thanks, Pavel!
A very interesting site indeed. I tried a camera comparison.
My wife's new Sony p&s auto everything vs the Canon G10 at twice the cost with a bigger sensor. The Sony appeared to my eye to beat or equal the G10 in almost every test.

I'm anxious to see some real life images from my lady's new digicam.

You may be right Dennis about the camera performance. I think however that a skilled photographer may be able to coax more out of the Canon then from the Sony. I do think that trying identical setting is a fair test of "default" but it is not a fair test of camera's ultimate performance. Having RAW is in itself a great advantage. Having an optical viewfinder is a great help when composition is critical. Manual settings permit better dynamic range and less noise.

Pavel, you are absolutely correct regarding the results that can be obtained by a "skilled" photographer. However, for the others, such a camera can be most intimidating. So, the way I see it, getting a pretty good image with a p&s, as opposed to a superb one with a complex machine, is better than no image at all.

P. S., I saw about 60 images from my wife's auto everything p&s camera. They were not amazing, but remarkably good. The camera's software does its best to analyze the scene to optimize the exposure. Under difficult conditions, it even decides to take 2 exposures, varying ISO, shutter speed and/or aperature to give you a choice of results. My lady is really happy using the iddy biddy p&s after refusing to handle the chunky, amazing cameras we know and love, But who know where that will lead.
