Canon G1X
#1

Any thoughts on the new G1 X compact introduced by Canon?

http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canong1x/

It's a beefed up G series model, with much larger dimensions but all importantly a large sensor. The size is 20% smaller than a APS-C sized sensor but larger than micro four thirds so it should yield some improved IQ.

They have not embraced the interchangeable lens ethos though, choosing instead a fixed 28-112mm equivalent similar to the Fuji X10, although the lens is much slower, being F2.8-5.8. I suppose with such a large sensor, a faster lens would have been too big to reasonably squeeze on a compact body.

Other than that it's got the usual optical viewfinder / window, flip out LCD screen.

They all have to have 'something' to sell it with. Otherwise everyone will smell a rat. :|
Look at the car trade Vauxhall Astra now more than 20% larger than the original And ( supersmall type) 240% pricier than the original. :/

Lumix LX5.
Canon 350 D.+ 18-55 Kit lens + Tamron 70-300 macro. + Canon 50mm f1.8 + Manfrotto tripod, in bag.

Hands on photos here - it actually looks similar in size to the Panny GX1, when you take into account the lens and body:

Good point regarding the sensor sizes, Matthew. I guess it's pretty nitpicky when you compare between the m43 / APS-c but when comparing between the current G-series to the new sensor, it's like night and day.

I wonder if Canon's wording is carefully chosen so as to "answer" the pixel technology of the Fuji X-100? I'd guess so, and I love this raising of the bar for "compacts" too.
