I think I've said many times that my dream job would be a travel photographer, such as the iconic National Geographic Magazine. This blog post by John Stanmeyer reveals what it's actually like being a photographer for NGM - from the initial idea, to researching and developing the story, organising the logistics and finally shooting.

I found it eye opening that the actual developmental process and planning took up so much time and only 10% of it was photography:
Also fascinating was how ruthless editors could be - especially when they scrapped photos from an entire location because the photos didn't tell a strong enough story.
He promises to do more posts along the same vein - I can't wait for the next installments.
