Olympus E-330 Live view LCD can spot cancer cells
#1

It's pretty awesome when digital camera technology is used in creative, non-photographic related ways, and even cooler when it's saving lives. Apparently researchers at Rice University are using the live view mode on the Olympus E-330 to spot cancer cells which have been coloured with a fluorescent dye.

Quote:In the tests, a common fluorescent dye was used to make cell nuclei glow brightly and images taken using tip of the fiber-optic bundle attached to the camera. The distorted nuclei which indicate cancerous and pre-cancerous cells could then be distinguished on the camera's LCD monitor.
