Posting links to photos rather than photos themselves
#1

Matthew and I discussed a possibility of displaying photos on Shuttertalk by linking to photos from other sites (Flickr in my case). If I could do that, it would get me around the file size problem that stops me from posting here photos which I use on Flickr and in club competitions.

1) Question to all: Is it currently possible? How can I do it?
2) Question for Julian: If it is not currently possible or if it is difficult to do, could this feature be added?

There are many fine photographers here and I get good quality and sometimes (thankfully) unvarnished comments but I do not want to create separate files for Shuttertalk and I want to show the photos not overly compressed, as many of my photos depend on fine detail for their effect.

Thanks

Pavel

I remote link my images from Flickr or my own gallery all the time, the feature is already available.

Just click img button and paste in the URL of the Image, or type

< img > http://www.craig.calisnaps.com/upload/20...7e13a6.jpg < /img >

But without the spaces above.

Actually use square brackets instead of angled brackets - i.e. [ img ] and [ /img ]

My concern about linking from other sites is that if the other site or image goes away then the thread loses relevance. It happens commonly when people link to their own blogs or websites, and for some reason or another the site falls into disuse, or they install some new software or the site or domain expires, and we're left looking at red X's. It can also happen if a site changes their URL structure - e.g. instead of site.com/photos/020.jpg it becomes site.com/img/020 then again things will break.

Another one is where people use "quick" image hosting sites that are designed for short durations such as auctions etc. - these images tend to expire after a certain time or after a period of inactivity.

Anyway, those are the main reasons I encourage people to use the image upload function within ST over external sites.

With sites like Flickr though my fears are probably unfounded as they would undoubtedly be around for many years to come - so please, if this is a major factor holding you back from posting your images, then feel free to go ahead and remote link your photos from there. As to integrating it with our forum software, I can't find any pre-made extensions, and I currently don't have the time to invest integrating it with flickr's API...

If you google for "flickr bbcode" you can find some tools which people have come up with to help them post their photos to bulletin boards (using bbcode), such as:

If you use the firefox browser, there are some scripts or extensions which help as well:

Thank you Bob and Julian. This is both instructive and helpful. I also appreciate your concerns Julian. I will follow your advice.
