Sensor Cleaning *gulp*......
#1

Before I begin, Rufus will atest to the fact that this stressed me out on a previous occasion. Fortunately, I was able to clear any particles with the mirror up-hand blower method. Seemed to work great.....

Now however, I have a much dirtier sensor... blowing is useless and I have reviewed the pbase page on cleaning your sensor, but to be honest it still makes me feel less than enthusiastic about cleaning this thing. Primarily because I have only "read" about it, and never actually watched someone do it.

Who here cleans their own sensor? Am I better to just send the camera off to Nikon (D70).

Now for the really dumb questions.

Dumb Question #1 - Do I just clean the sensor located under the mirror, or do I clean the mirror as well?

Dumb question #2 - Do I take the sensor out?? I clean it whilst in the camera. Please avoid rolling your eyes at this stage, as the questions could potentially get worse.

Dumb Question #3 - Would my local camera store have the pads and solution for doing this?

Dumb Question #4 - More a statement really....A step by step process would really help. After I successfully do it, or ruin the sensor in the process I will dedicate my life to helping others successfully clean their sensor.

#5 - Do you bother to use lens cleaner sheets on the exterior of your lenses on a regular basis or wait until something is on there that rquires cleaning.

Cheers all......

Jerry.

The process has been made to look difficult by others, but it is very simple.

1/ Prepare your tools
2/ In a cleanish environment, lock mirror and remove lens.
3/ Swipe lightly dampened swab over sensor from on side to the other ONCE.
4/ Rotate swab to use it's opposite side, and swipe once more in the opposite direction.
5/Replace lens.
6/Unlock mirror.
7/ Admire handywork.

I've followed this proceedure 3 times now, and it's never failed.

Any tips for checking whether it's really clean after you've done the cleaninng?

I brought it in to the local camera specialists today for cleaning.

However!... I am planning on getting the necessary equipment and doing myself nex time. No more Mr. Nice Guy with this sensor business.

Point at light object. Usually blue sky. Dont focus, close down to small aperture like f22. Take pic. Inspect result for dust ghosties and grumblies.
