So, new Nikon 300s and some upgraded lenses are out.

The changes introduced in 300s seem decidedly underwhelming, unless you wish to use DSLR to shoot movies (why?). Rumors have it that in 2010, the next generation will have a new sensor, faster processor and that it will be possible to shoot 2 shots using a single shutter press and use the two images for noise cancelation or for extending dynamic range. Now that would be tempting.

Some interesting things, but not nearly the thunderstorm of new introductions that the rumour sites were forecasting.

The D300s seems to have four changes:
- SD and CF slots; SD is slow, but gives some upward mobility for people with a D40/60/90/5000, are available just about anywhere, an two slots are always better than one. (And it could be worse: it could be an xD card slot. Big Grin)
- Video; it's the new Live View, but only the GH1 seems to have gotten it right so far. If this has been imported from the D90, what took so long?
- 7fps; the D300 could always shoot this fast, so the improvement must be in power management rather than shutter/mirror design.
- the lowercase letter "s".

The D3000:
- The cheapest Nikon SLR, launching at a price $50US higher than what the D60 sells for in Toronto, featuring the D60 sensor.

The 70-200II:
- This one shows some promise; the MTF charts look pretty good.

The 18-200II
- I really, really want to make a 'zoom creep' joke.

It may be worth remembering that the camera company's customers aren't camera users, they're camera stores. Even if every store has plenty of stock, they now need to order sizable quantities of the new letters and numbers. It doesn't matter if there are no real differences, or if we passed the point of "good enough" generations ago, they still need to order them.
