Trivia Exercise - Songs with photography references
#1

As it seems half the people on this website are into music as well as photography, I thought the following might be an interesting little exercise...

What songs can you think of that contain interesting references to photography in them?

Possibly the ultimate example of this would be Paul Simon's "Kodachrome" - the entire song is just a big reference to photography.
But there are plenty of more subtle, obscure or just plain sneaky ones out there too.

I'll start the ball rolling with the song "Old Soul Song (For The New World Order)" by Bright Eyes. It's a song about two people attending a protest rally and taking photos of the protesters.
One of the verses reads:

"We left before the dust had time to settle
And all the broken glass swept off the avenue
And all the way home held your camera like a bible
Just wishing so bad that it held some kind of truth
And I stood nervous next to you in the darkroom
You dropped the paper in the water
And it all begins to bloom..."

Ok... Your turn! Smile

Hmmm...off the top of my head how about:

"Pictures of Lily" - The Who
"I'm Not in Love" - 10cc (contains the line " I'll keep your picture upon the wall....")

A bit of a loose connection in both cases though!

Jan (off to play records in her head and seek photography related lyrics!).

Back with three more:

"Life Thru a Lens" - Robbie Williams
"Girls on Film" - Duran Duran
"A Photograph of You" - Depeche Mode

Gone again!

Punky's Dilemma - by Paul Simon. I have the Barbra Streisand recording on the "What About Today" album - and the line is .....

"If I become a famous lady, would you put my photo on your piano - from MaryJane, best wishes to Martin"

J Geils Band-Freeze Frame

Freeze-Frame! - I could see it was a rougli-cut Tuesday

Slow-motion weekdays stare me down. Her lipstick reflex got me wound

There were no defects to be found
snapshot image froze without a sound.
Thursday morning was a hot flash-factor

Her face still focused in my mind.
Test-strip proof-sheet love is hard to find

Friday night we'll dance the spotlight grind

Stop-time heart for me if she's not mine.

Freeze-Frame! Freeze-Frame! Freeze-Frame!
Freeze-Frame! Now Freeze!
Now I'm lookin' at a flashback Sunday

Zoom lens feelings just won't disappear

Close-up darkroom sweet-talk in my ear.
Her hot-spot love for me is strong

This freeze-frame moment can'tbe wrong.
Freeze-Frame! Freeze-Frame! Freeze-Frame! Freeze-Frame! Now Freeze!
Freeze-Frame ! Freeze-Frame ! Freeze-Frame ! Freeze-Frame ! Now Freeze !

"that's the story of my life" by Lou Reed / The Velvet Underground.

It mentions neither cameras or pictures, but was written about something said to him by a photographer.

How's that for obscure?

A few to add to the list:

Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story
Willie Nelson - Picture in a Frame
The Cure - Pictures of You
REM - Camera
Steely Dan - Peg ("and when you smile for the camera, I know they're gonna love it!")
Ringo Starr - Photograph
Verve Pipe - Photograph
Weezer - Photograph
Ella Fitzgerald - Photograph
Sugar Ray - Photograph of You
Depeche Mode - Photographic
Ryan Adams - Burning Photographs
The Priscillas - Gonna Rip Up Your Photograph
Veruca Salt - Shutterbug

And anything by the band Aztec Camera, but especially the song "Walk out to Winter" with a brilliant reference to photos of former (late) Clash leader Joe Strummer: "faces of Strummer that fell from your wall, and nothing was left where they hung" ... now that's imagery!

Picture of you--Joe Brown.

I also remember a song with the words ..'I keep her picture hanging upside down, cos I can't stand the sight of her face.' It may not be a photograph though.:/

My tea's gone cold I'm wondering why I..
got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window..
and I can't see at all
And even if I could it'd all be gray,
but your picture on my wall
It reminds me, that it's not so bad,
it's not so bad..

"Stan" Eminem / Dido.

Canon 50D.
