VHS to Digital / DVD
#1

Today I was going to go to a shop to get our wedding video converted from VHS to DVD - digital format of course so that the quality doesn't deteriorate over time. I decided to google some shops and came across a thread where they suggested plugging the output of the VHS player to the AV-in on my video camera and converting that way.

I don't know why I didn't think of it before - its so blindingly obvious. It's probably because I always thought the AV port on the camcorder was an "out" port, for playing videos on a TV. My video camera is a hard disk camcorder so once recorded, I can just transfer it straight to the computer and do editing there.

Anyway, just to summarise - how to convert VHS to Digital / DVD:

1. Plug VHS player output to video camera AV in, using cables that came with the camera (my camera has one plug which is dual purpose)
2. In my camera I had to go to settings and enable the AV input
3. Play the tape on the VHS player
4. Start recording on the video camera
5. Transfer to PC, optionally edit, and burn to DVD
