"Ashes and Snow"

Ashes and Snow by Canadian artist Gregory Colbert is an installation of photographic artworks, films, and a novel in letters that travels in the Nomadic Museum, a temporary structure built exclusively to house the exhibition. The work explores the shared poetic sensibilities of human beings and animals. Ashes and Snow has traveled to Venice, New York, Santa Monica, Tokyo, and Mexico City. To date, Ashes and Snow has attracted more than 10 million visitors, making it the most attended exhibition by a living artist in history.

From his book, A Novel in Letters";

""The longer I watch the savannah elephants, the more I listen, the more I open. They remind me of who I am... May the guardian elephants hear my wish to collaborate with all the musicians of nature's orchestra. I want to join the dance that has no steps. I want to become the dance.

In the beginning of time, the skies were filled with flying elephants.

Too heavy for their wings, they sometimes crashed through the trees and frightened other animals.

All the flying grey elephants migrated to the source of the Ganges.
They agreed to renounce their wings and settle on the earth.
When they molted, millions of wings fell to the earth, the snow covered them, and the Himalayas were born.

The blue elephants landed in the sea and their wings became fins.
They are whales, the trunkless elephants of the oceans.
Their cousins are the manatees, the trunkless elephants of the rivers.

The chameleon elephants kept their wings but agreed never again to land on the earth. When they go to sleep, the elephants always lie down in the same place in the sky and dream with one eye open.

The stars you see at night are the unblinking eyes of sleeping elephants, who sleep with one eye open to best keep watch over us."

I thought now and noticed that when and why my love of photography began... The magazine, "National Geographic"! It has a very special place in my life, but I think, it is same for most of us. There are so beautiful and unforgetable pictures in our memories. I remember, (many years ago) how I was waiting for a new issue, I was so excited. To open my envelope for a new month, it was my best times in my daily life. At that time, there wasn't internet, even it wasn't easy to be a subcriber in my country, because of some laws it wasn't easy to get a foreign magazines, books, etc. from abroad like today. But I found always a way to have these magazines and it was really great reading and watching. Today when I think of all these things I can realize that yes, it was the beginning for loving photography! Also it was inspiration for me, I made some paintings of some of these photos too.

And today, there is "National Geographic" in Turkey and published in Turkish language... and of course, internet and all connections to the world! This is great. Google, I can say, it is my great library! Everything just under our fingers for to click!

And yes, also there is a TV channel of National Geographic, in here, Turkish again, and it is one of my best channels. I love this kind of programs and sometimes I'm being impressed so much, as when I watched the story of this 1998 expedition. I made this video and wrote this poem, it was about the Tsangpo River and dedicated to Doug Gordon.

Photographers Roland and Sabrina Michaud offer an artistic and historical voyage of Islamic culture that's into the contrasts classical Islamic images with modern photographs -- from North Africa to China -- of the same scene. Many of the images, taken largely from miniatures. All these images and miniatures show us life, art, and culture between thirteenth and twentieth centuries... Seems much more like for correlations from past and present by comparing them through beautiful imagery. Beautiful 20th century photos, taken in the Islamic World are juxtaposed against exquisite reproductions of 13th- to 20th-century Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Moghul miniatures.

As if time stopped in some places of the world... When you see the miniatures by these 20th century photos, you think like that.

Arif Asci (Arif AşcıWink one of Turkish photographers

I was impressed so much by his Silk Road project. It was the expedition of "Silk Road" in our times organized by Arif Asci. A four man and ten camel team that crossed the ancient Silk Road from China to Turkey in 1996-1997. I wished to be in this team, as if to be Marco Polo once again.

Cemal Gulas (Gülas), he is one of my favourite photographers. He is also making documentary films about Anatolia, especially about Black Sea.
A few years ago he found a baby bear while he was at the Kackar Mountain for his documentary project, and took care of this baby bear, named Datvi,
