Interesting Matthew. My view is that the build quality given that I will be buing no accessories, given my age and given the rate at which sexy new cameras atr being introduced, who knows what i will want in 5 years. May be just hot chocolate. I am interested in the new Nikon P&S which is supposed to replace P6000 as top Nikon P&S, have an APSC sensor and compete with G11. Is it worth the wait?

There's nothing wrong with the G11's build - it's just not as solid-feeling as the G9 and G10, which are the other two that I'm familiar with. It's still a very nice camera.
I don't know anything about a new Nikon P&S - I don't have any inside knowledge about anything, usually - but I don't put any faith in rumours, and have low expectations for the Coolpix line in general. It's history repeating itself all over again - the P6000 was supposed to be Nikon's competitor to the G10, and that fell pretty flat. The G10's price never dropped much below $500, but the last of the P6000's were selling for $350. I could be wrong, and frequently am, but I'll believe in a market-leading Coolpix when I see it.
(It's not that Nikon can't build a decent camera... they just choose not to.)
The S90 looks like a fantastic point and shoot.
For me the absence of optical viewfinder on S90 is a deal breaker. How on earth do you compose outdoors? I do not see anything much on my LCD (D300) and yet my camera still has one of the best LCD displays around. Indoors or in a shadow, that is a different matter.
No optical viewfinder is not ideal, but honestly I find the tiny viewfinders on compacts a real hassle to use and most of them are only an approximate view...
Just bought Canon G11 and posted my first shot on Flickr. My initial beef is that it is easy to accidentally change settings by pushing one of the buttons on the back. Also, I would dread the thought of changing aperture or shutter speed on this thing with even the thinnest gloves on. I find the viewfinder brighter than i feared, the flip LCD is actually quite useable outside of the bright sun and I love all the twists and turns I can do with it. No more squinting through the viewfinder and lying on the ground. Just kneel and flip the screen horizontally. The image quality is good and I did not seem to have noise problems up to ISO 400 (did not check above). It seems to focus quite close and I was using it all the time like an ultrawide. I forgot that I can not use the viewfinder up close - I am too used to SLRs. Heavier than I thought and not tiny, but lighter than my D300 with a comparable lens on. A nice alternative, if I ever learn how to use it and if my wife lets me use it (I bought it for her after all)

I have been using a G9 already for few weeks, and I found it a bit difficult to handle... but in my last shooting I got something nice. I hope with the time I get better...
I am sure your photos are outstanding Irma. I did not see much of your work that does not deserve that label. It is very nice to hear from you. I hope to see some of your work on Flickr again.
