Today I went and blew 150 dollars on a Nikkor 50 mm f1.8 Prime Lens. It gets dark here quite early now and my 3.5-6.3 zoom just wasn't giving me clear shots. I never thought I would do this but I did. On the D40, the lens is not autofocus--but focussing is very easy. I will test it over the next few days.
Enjoy Don - I am sure we will see the 'fruits' of your purchase soon.
I love my Canon F1.8 50mm Prime.
Thanks Wedding and Bob. On my camera, the prime works like a 75 mm f1.8 lens. Ive been trying it in the house, taking pictures of printed materials. It is really sharp. It's also very light. I may make a practice of carrying it around with me in a small case.
The 50/1.8 was tied for the first lens I bought for my Nikon camera, and serves me well if rarely.

I have no doubt that you'll get great results from it wide-open.
I needed something for low light. Im going use it on the bus. It's also very light weight.
