Hi. This is my first time at posting one of these topics so be kind. In fact, be very kind. Lie to my e-face if that's what it takes. ha! Big Grin

..

Really though, I'm posting this up here as I'd like some honest feedback. I uploaded it to dA tonight.. we'll see how that goes too.

Let me know if I've crossed some sort of etiquette.. Thanks guys. Smile

Hey smelly...

I like what youv'e done with this shot. The colours are very well done, and the framing with border is quite artistic. I feel something is lacking - perhaps a subject of interest. Maybe more beach? A very pleasant shot.

p.s. Congrats on your first showcase! Smile
Hello again!

Hey, why "Smelly" ??????????????????????

Anyway. No, I dont like this one. I think it needs:

a: an unequal beach - sea / horizon split
b: a foreground subject

Having said that though, you shouldve seen my first posted pic, (not here). This, in comparison, is a work of art.
Keep posting! We KNOW you'll like it!! Smile
Lovely color and feel.

I think if there is any room for improvement - it is "possibly" in the composition. The fact that there is no obvious subject in this one (i.e. boat, person) makes me view it as an abstract - like a color field painting. You can strengthen this abstract feel by straightening the shooting angle - make the shore/wave line straight horizontally across the picture - not at an angle to the viewer. This basically make the photo 2-dimensional rather than 3.

I know that this seems contrary to everything we learn about making pictures "interesting", but it can be very powerful in a photo like this.

Well done - post more!
I agree that the only real improvement is composition... but this requires practice (and feedback). I have found the best way to learn composition is to take a photo of mine that I almost like and then find similar photos by other people that I do like and then note the differences.

For example, check out this page for photos similar to yours... note that for most of them, if there is a horizon, there tends to be a foreground subject... no foreground -> no horizon (or very little above it). The beauty of this method of learning composition is that youlearn what works without having to learn why. Smile
This is an example of a type rather than an artistic exporation. It's like an inuit carving, beautiful but often repeated.

Mmm. Composition you say? Tis an interesting comment, because it's something that someone on my dA page commented about as well. I'll have to rethink it.

The image itself is one that I wasn't sure about. It's a very plain shot, and doesn't have a sole focal point.. but that was what I liked about it. :\ Either way, thanks for the feedback and advice guys! Smile It's very appreciated.
