I have "The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers" shown in this link. It is fantastic. If you only buy one Photoshop book, this is the one.

I don't sound biased, do I??

I agree that Kelby's book is the best general-purpose PS book, but for portrait retouch work I get much more use out of the book below it, Photoshop Restoration & Retouching by Katrin Eismann. I would not recommend it to beginners though.
