Full Version: Non-photoshop software for compressing images?

I have been using Gimphoto for a while to compress/resize my images, and it seems fine to me, but I'm not sure if there is any other software out there (apart from photoshop) that could do a better job.

I guess the main question is: does the "save for web" option work basically the same in all software? Or are some better than others?
I must admit I've always just used photoshop or photoshop elements, in the past Paint Shop Pro and also in recent times I've also tried Pixelmator (mac). Honestly I haven't paid much attention to the differences, if any. These days with broadband connections, image sizes are less important for the web, so long as some compression and compressible format is used.
