My wife got a new mobile phone this week - the Sony Ericsson S500i - which has a built in camera module. The deal also came with an iPod mini (awesome!) but I won't go into that. Looks like Christmas came early, huh?

Anyway, we've been playing around with the phone, and the picture quality isn't too bad. Obviously not as good as a digital SLR with a prime lens, but it's got portability and the "fun" factor on its side.

What do you think about these little gadgets?
the nokia 7610 is a very nice camera phone. 1 megapixel camera.

I saw a photo develeoped from the camera in Strathfield the other day and i couldn't believe it came from a phone....... i thought it was from a real camera.

But some camera phones produce really dodgey photos.....but the quality seems to be getting better
Whoa... haven't seen you round these parts in ages, dave! Big Grin
yeah i know......i get kinda lost in the whole photography scene

But when i saw 'camera phones' i jumped at the chance of possibly posting something
I don't need a camera in my phone and i don't need my PC to make toast.... Maybe i am out of sync... but I find that a device that is designed to do one thing does it much better than a device that is doing 2-3 things.

Use a hammer on nails and a can opener on your beans!
I'd be so much more productive if I could get my computer to make my morning toast!
I wouldn't mind another toy.

Actually, talking about this, I just remembered that I bought a camera attachment for my phone but hate using it.
so much lag, well.... SadSad of course compared to DSLR its not fun

Waffles!! Write a waffle/toast action for PS and *POOF* instant millionaire!!

Sorry, it's been a long day...
How do you connect one of those phones to a computer? I think you need a special infra red port.
Most common is a infrared port, although some of the newer phones have bluetooth connectivity. Most manufacturers also sell a data cable which plugs into either a serial or USB port.
The SE T610/T630 along with some of the sub $800 Nokias cameras are just not even cameras, they are visual memos if anything, I don't think there is any need in a phone for a camera unless the camera is on the face of the phone and used for video confrencing.
I sometimes read about people being stopped for taking candid shots on the street, parks etc. Recently there have been 2-3 (all male) taken in for questioning when seen using long lenses when there were children nearby. None of them had a case to answer, no charges - all completely innocent, genuine photographers.

I can't help thinking maybe the camera phones are a bigger threat, by the pervs, as they can take a snapshot less conspicously and send the pic instantly.

I never point my camera at children these days. Parents and grandparents are no longer allowed to take pix of their own children in a school play, nativity play, at the swimming pool, at a Birthday Party in McDonalds and various other situations. That's very sad in my opinion.

I have a mobile phone and hate it - have it switched off most of the time now. I have absolutely no wish for a camera/phone.

Toast from the PC - certainly! A built-in microwave could be useful. A cashpoint machine and 'night safe' for banking cheques would be a good addition to a PC too. Cool

Shuttertalk, another thing before you start using your Phone like you do the Fuji, read this and don't let it be you =)

Lol... you got me dewy!! There goes my aspirations as an amateur porn photographer. Big Grin

Seriously, how low can you get...
There was also an engineer in singapore caught taking photographs up someones skirt, and he left the flash on.. he was arrested!
well, a little off topic since it wasn't a camera-phone Tongue

but camera phones seem so sneaky....!
Lol.... funny story adam!

Oh my cousin was also telling me a story - he was waiting for a friend at a market and saw this suspicious looking man carrying a bag loitering around... the man was holding the bag like you would a shopping bag - i.e. close to the ground, and it seemed to be open. My cousin gets curious and sneaks a look in, and there's a video camera in it! The pervert was filming up people's skirts! :x

Actually I've seen some very effective photos taken with a camera phone. They are low res but they don't look like internet camera photos, they are not pixillated. They look as if they were cleaned up with an antiscratch filter or a painting simulation. I rather liked them.
Caliean: all I can say is ... what the???

Don: Hm... I wonder whether camera phones might inspire you to greater heights with your bus photos and street photography?? Smile
An idea, Shuttertalk. I have no money and am inspired enough...lol.

this is a little old, but still good...

the ultimate camera phone
Ha ha... now that's what I call a camera phone!
I have a Motorola V551, the camera in it isn't great, only 0.3 Megapixels, but after I take the pictures I send them to my computer and mess around with them on photoshop and they end up looking ok. Also, I don't always carry a camera with me so when I do see a good shot I can take it with my phone.
Hi Canucklehead Big Grin Welcome to Shuttertalk Big Grin
I think cameraphones are reasonable now, some of them! (it's the photographer, not the camera in the end isn't it? haha)
After playing with some camera phones, I realise that it's more for convenience rather than high image quality and things like that, and it's FUN TO PLAY Big Grin
Hey Canucklehead! Greetings and welcome to ST! Big Grin

I found that the cameras on camera phones tend to vary wildly . My wife's Sony Ericsson K500i produces lovely photos (albeit at 640x480), but my new camera phone produces such washed out, off colour and blurry photos that I'm embarassed to use it. Big Grin
