I like the little specular highlights. Makes it look icy.

Thanks. I spent a fair amount of time on that one, took loads of shots as it was quite difficult to get a decent one.
It's for a photo assignment (Food) on another board - just a fun thing but I wanted something a bit different rather than a plate of food, contents of fridge or whatever. Out of about 50 shots, that's one of the few where the onion looks fresh, with half-decent lighting picking up the rings and highlights. I kept the onion damp, but it still looked flat on a lot of the shots.
I used a thin slice laid on a small lightbox, backlit. Tried with the ambient light from a large window but it was no good. I eventually got the shot shown here with the 100mm macro lens at f32 and the ring flash.
Still needed a fair amount of tweaking in PS too - but I'm happy enough with the result for now. Besides - the room stinks of raw onion and there are bits of it all over the table and floor

Mmmm... onions.... and don't get me started on beans....

Feb 3, 2005, 15:33
Mmm, delicious! I love onion. There is hardly a dish I cook without them. Well, pancakes come to my mind. But everything else has onions in it!

I think food is one of the hardest subjects to take photos of...
I think it's because you put effort into making it taste good and there is a natural tendancy to think that the photo will turn out as good as it tastes...

Custard doesnt.
Feb 3, 2005, 18:25
I never prepared custard. I don't like it. It hasn't got any onions.
Feb 3, 2005, 18:28
Ah, BUT.
But, you've never eaten at my mother-in-laws, have you?? Ha! See? Gotcha there!

Yours often does.
All the scraps go into your dish, so there's onion in your custard when we have things like mince, burgers or bangers followed by crumble and custard. Those are the nights you get sent to sleep in the outside kennel - because the onion makes your breath smelly :o

Agreed. Someone has posted some wonderful shots in the assignment thread where I posted the onion slice. The lighting is wonderful - as is the composition and the actual food in the pictures. A huge, delicious joint of roast beef with salad on the side and another shot of a plate overflowing with piles of fried bacon .... delicious! There's also a very tempting and tasty looking slice Lemon Pavlova - I'm drooling over it all.
It's nigh impossible for us to reproduce food pix at home compared to the pix we see in magazines, recipe books etc unless we have a choice of presentation dishes, lights, top notch food or a good supply of not-so-good food and oils, blowtorches or whatever to make it look good

Those published/promo images have usually been set up with the help of the chefs and food writers, the publication, restaurants or whoever. Planning, Lighting, colours for the layout to complement the food, quality of the food all come into play.
It's fun to rise to the challenge and see what we can get at home though. I wasn't very excited about my onion image - I think it's boring, but it's the best I managed to get yesterday so I used it anyway. I'd hoped to get an interesting effect of the rings by using a thin slice with backlighting - but it didn't work very well, then the lightbox died on me.
I need to get my brain into gear and be a bit more imaginative and innovative - also need to stop stuffing my face with all the best food before I get any shots of it .

I've been shooting food again this morning. I still have about 80 shots to look at. but here's one I hope will make the mouth water instead of the eyes.

You don't make anything useful. You just make a mess everywhere skidding across the kitchen with wet, muddy feet, leaving hair all over the carpets and furniture, digging holes in the lawn and I'm not even going to think about all the other mess you make when you're let loose in the garden! :o
You'll never catch me either because I have a new turbo-zimmer

As for your latest job - when you went for the interview, did you tell them you'd been fired from your job at the Rice Pudding factory for drooling in the pudding?
Y'need Petographer to train you to sit still and get on with he job without drooling!

Nobody told me - it was me who told your boss you about you drooling and leaving hair everywhere ..... so you were fired.
I found a lot of your hair in several tins of rice pudding - and the drool on the top of one tin was so horrible it put me off rice pudding for ages. Yuck!
Serves you right for knocking me off my perch when you were skidding all over the place chasing your tail and yapping at Poppy

Here's another shot of the bowl of fruit from this morning. I had about 90 shots, still going through them. I wish I'd had some grapes or plums, I think I'd have preferred it without the rim of the plate showing quite so much.

Your picture is very nice Polly, I like the color and texture of the bananas. I bought some grapes, plums and apples today, but I am not quite sure I will have some tomorrow to take a picture. I like them a lot
Here is a picture my Guerito took frew months ago, when we wanted to add his Bolognese Sauce recipe to my recipe book. He took picture from the whole process, so I got a lot
