Can any of you help?
I have a digital SLR the Canon 20D. On Appature and Shutter Priority modes the Light Meter has stopped working. It works on Manual mode though. This is ever since I tried a flash on the hotshoe.
How do you know it isn't working? Are you getting any exposure readings at all in the viewfinder?
No.
The light meter doesn't move if I change the f-stop or the shutter speed...
Yet, it does seem to work on manual mode :/
Was it a Canon flash??? If not, did you check the trigger voltage?
Have you checked for damaged hot-shoe contacts.
Have you tried removing the battery from the camera, and re-booting?
Have you tried several lenses??

Are you talking about the scale in the viewfinder that goes from -2 to +2?
If so, the camera is functioning properly.
In Manual mode, as you have noted, it is actually metering and telling you whether you are under or over exposed. It changes according to your aperture and shutter speed settings.
But in Av and Tv mode, it is showing you the
exposure compensation (EC) setting, which you can adjust using the rear wheel on the camera. It will not change EC.

It was stuck on +1 over exposed...
I didn't know that you could use the larger wheel like that on Apature and Shutter priority modes! I only used it when on Manual. Good to know. I must have moved it to +1 by mistake.
I think I may go out for a walk and take a few pictures now! LOL

Yes, it's incredibly helpful, and conveniently located so that you can adjust it with your right thumb while looking through the viewfinder. Now don't forget that the FEC control is separate from the EC control, so if you're using your flash you may need one or the other, or both!
Don't feel foolish. I've been known to turn the rear wheel "off" and then start to panic when I suddenly can't adjust EC. Or leave ISO at 1600 and wonder why I'm suddenly shooting at 1/4000s outdoors. Or leave WB at tungsten when I'm shooting in the shade, and can't figure out why my pics are blue. Or leave mirror-lockup enabled after shooting macros, and then thinking that the camera is broken when the shutter doesn't release!
Anyway, I'm very glad that was the solution. As you said, it could have been much worse.

On my manual only Pentax MZM I never had these issues! Then again I do use my digital more often.
