This is why I am glad I went with a more powerful flash.

Pentax *ist Ds, Pentax 18-50mm DA, Sigma 500 DG Super.
I bought the same flash myself and haven't been dissapointed yet. Great shot.
ooo Smile
would that otherwise be almost complete darkness?
Yep, total and complete darkness, this is about 50 metres underground, this is the drop into the second chamber (this drop is around 33 metres. Had to guess the manual focus. :o

Just looking at the shot and the shadows I am thinking that I remotelly fired the big flash from the on camera flash here. Rolleyes
Great stuff! Does the flash have the infrared focusing assist? Will it help with focusing in darkeness?
Yes it has the focusing assist but at 30-40 foot it is a long way, I have used a big spotlight for focusing before but this cave is just too extreme to take that sort of big gear into.
That's some GN, and with a lovely coverage...lovely stuff!
Great detail
Good wide-angle coverage. I'm surprised there wasn't more light falloff. Very impressive.
aaaaaaaaaaw........ excellent shot.

apart from the technical issues though, I am kind of curious about what you were doing down there... is this a hobby?
where is the cave at?

I was helping to run and participate on an advanced caving course. I am an Aventourous Activity Leader with Scouts Australia and help run abseiling, rock climbing and caving for Scouts on weekends in my spare time, i also am a Scout Leader with a normal Scout Troop in my local suburb.

In case anyone was wondering the Sigma DG 500 Super flash has a GN of 50.

Slej, I did mention before that I used the big flash off camera and fired it from the on camera flash on my DS, I am thinking that the onboard camera flash did not contribute very much, it has a GN from memory of about 12 or 15. Oh yes I only used jpeg mode, yeah I know I should have shot this one in RAW, next time.
