Another great action shot. Did you shoot in RAW? Might be worth having a go a brightening the image and playing around with the white balance if you did.

Cheers

I know its not the same but you could move the puck in photoshop and nobody will know...(except me and you and everyone on the internet....)
LOL Smarti , i just dont think that would be "right " , but the thought did cross my mind .

No WS didnt shoot RAW i was a fraid of the space it would kill in my memory . I wasnt sure how much i was going to be shooting. I think the next time i will be shooting in raw though. The lighting there isnt the best and i dont have a flash to help me out there . The man that i was shooting with had a 580 with a booster ( i dont know what else to call it ) and his shots are great . Just another thing to add to my wish list Big Grin

I have to agree about moving the puck. Everyone knows I love to manipulate photos, but this falls into a different category. This is photojournalism, and purports to be TRUE - so manipulation has to be out.

Touching up exposures with RAW, though is legitimate..
Very nice action picture Shawn...

I worked a subtle tone mapping with your picture and it worked fine... I think... maybe it lacks a bit of contrast but I am sure you could do with the original much better that I did... Smile

Sorry I just now saw it was in the Showcase forum...
Please show me Irma, I always look for some input . and thanks for the kind words

I agree Toad , its hard to get a shot but i think the ones that are close are still better than a manipulated one .

good capture BD, have to agree I wouldn't move the puck in this case........only because you showed the original WinkBig GrinBig Grin
The booster he had was probably a better beamer or something like that.

LOL , how do you know its not already been put there . LOL

that might be it WS . I know he could light that place up with it . I think the thing that i didnt like was he couldnt " burst " because of using flash . And i was shooting atleast 2 shots , but normally 3 or 4 when something was going on .

Thanks Shawn... Here is my try to give more light to your picture...

Just convert the picture to 32bit image and then back to 8bit image... in the process you'll get a dialog window with some options... Choose local adaptation and then work with the curves.. The down left dot (black) run to the right to almost reach the graphic... then the upper right dot goes down a bit not to blown out the white color.. Still a bit of contrast and color enhancement is needed I think....
Shawn, the photo you posted was 1/1000 @ f3.2 in aperture priority mode.

The ice in a hockey rink is just like snow and white beach sand in that it fools a camera's exposure meter into trying to expose the white as 18% grey to preserve details.

Next time try dialing-in +1 or +2 EV compensation.
Your shutter speed will be longer, so there might be some motion blur but the actual subjects (the players) will be exposed more correctly. We all know ice is white, so loss of detail there isn't much of a concern. It won't blow-out indoors like it would outdoors on a sunny day, either. Let it blow out a little.

You can also try using shutter-priority mode at 1/250 or so with some +EV and carefully review the motion-blur on the players by zooming-in on the LCD. Might lend an "action' feel to your photos, but it's still a fast shutter.

Really, you're on the ragged edge with the bad indoor lighting here, so experiment and chimp freely.
Maybe look at some hockey photos in the magazines to see what the "pro's" ice looks like.

It's a great action shot that came around nicely in Irma's edit, so you're darn close already.
Good job.
First Irma I LOVE what you did . I have never changed to a 32 bit and wouldnt know how to ( but i am going to play in a min ) . Thanks for showing me your edit .

Keith i reall appreciate the time you took with all that typing . and i see what you are saying and the next time i think i am going to stick with just my camera . This shot was with the 1D Mark II and he set all the settings . I didnt even know how to scroll through the shot i took LOL .
I really dont think 1/250 will work , i was shotting f5 1/640 and a few of the shots have some motion blur in them , them guys are very fast . LOL . The next time i go , which is real soon , i am going to play alittle bit . I wasnt happy with a few things and i am going to see what i can do .
