I'm looking to buy a new tripod for my Canon 300D...anyone have any favourites?

Hey MG, I've got a Velbon CX330 (I think) - it's not bad for compact digicams... very light and easy to carry around, and gets the job done. It's also got a detachable base plate so you don't have to unscrew it to remove your camera.

If you're looking for a tripod for a DSLR though, I'd recommend something with more wieght (=more stable) as the mirror slap can cause vibrations resulting in blurry photos. I've heard Bogen, Manfrotto or Gitzo are good, but unfortunately, they're also $$$

You have to check out Manfrotto stands. I have a Manfrotto monopod. Lightweight and is excellent quality. Im sure its the same thing with their tripods

Yes, I can vouch for Mann tripods.
I have one. Cost me £120 with a P&T head. One day, having parked my car at an awkward angle and opened the rear door, the Mann shot out, crashed into the road, and rolled away.
Damage? Cosmetic. No worries. It's a great tripe, and one I fully expect to use for many years.

I'm very much a novice when it comes to tripod. This might sound very silly... Is Manfrotto tripods equally good for Nikon D70? Are there any other model which is good for Nikon D70?

In terms of Manfrotto and the like, as Rufus pointed out, they're usually very well constructed. All tripod brands have different models within their range, so get one that's suited to your application. There are also certain features to look out for:

1. Stability : purpose of tripod is to keep camera steady, when the mirror flips up on SLRs, it may cause some of the lighter ones to shake. However, heavy = harder to carry...

2. Heads : there are different types of heads that allow panning and tilting the camera in different ways. also make sure you get one with a quick release plate, so you don't have to unscrew the camera each time.

3. Construction : some models have legs can bend in different ways so that you can position your camera in funny angles.
