I found these links courtesy of Rob Galbraith's DPI - makes very interesting reading indeed about studio lighting, including light shaping, types of lights, techniques, etc.

This one talks about 5 key things to look out for when choosing light shapers: coverage, edge transfer, shadow definition, shadow contrast and highlight:

It has indeed great information about lighting. I still think that the light I like the most is the one you get with diffusers; soft and probably flat, but that is the one that I like it a lot. The other one I'd like to try is the one when you get desaturated colors. Have to check if I have the propper light to get it.
