Hey everyone!

It was Valentines's day yesterday - just wondering what everyone got up to? Is Valentine's day over-commercialised / overrated etc for you?

It certainly wasn't for me... I skipped the roses bit, but prepared a nice picnic and took my wife on a surprise trip to the moonlight cinemas in the Royal Botanic gardens. I'm not sure if you have these as well, but basically it's a giant screen in the middle of a lush park, and lots of people turn up to have a picnic. It was a great experience - it was nice to eat dinner in the peaceful parklands, then lay back as dusk fell to enjoy a romantic comedy. The movie showing wasn't that memorable, but it was nice nonetheless.

Mid movie, we were treated to an unexpected, spectacular fireworks display (not for us, but probably from the nearby river and casino) and it was very awesome to behold. I don't think I've seen fireworks so close up in a while, and I was a bit disappointed that I didn't bring a camera and tripod along... Big Grin

Anyway, just thought I'd share my V-day experience with you...

We dont bother about Valentines day, however went to the public library today and they had a huge iced cake with 'love from the library' on it plus coffee. And also the librarians had gone to the trouble of packaging mystery books with valentine labels and a small chocolate for borrowers. The books had been labelled mystery, romance etc. What a great idea, I left the library with a spring in my step. Smile
It's still the afternoon of the 14th here, and I'm waiting for my girl to get home.
We're going out to dinner.
I got her a card, and after I get paid Friday night I'll take her shopping Saturday.

Sure it's overcommercialized, but that doesn't make it any less fun.
I feel sorry for the people who get all worked-up about how "it's just a way for Hallmark and the florist and the candy companies to make money blahblahcomplainblah"
Those people have bills to pay, too.
A little extra romance never hurt anyone, but I tell her and show her how much I love her at least five times a day.
I used to, but she don't believe me now.
So we went for a longish walk. Just before arriving back home I saw a stag. I moved a few yards for a shot, but it turned out to be a horse, with a leafless tree silhouetted behind it's head. Oh bleep. Big Grin
Very nice stories, everyone! Big Grin

I forgot to mention - after the night out, I didn't realise that I had unwittingly parked in a residential permit zone, and gotten a ticket ($64!). I wasn't going to let that spoil the night, so I just put it down to "expensive parking". Oh well... Big Grin
Still V-day here. After work I did what most of us guys do. Last minute card, a dozen long stem roses along and some Belgium chocolates. I've bought her flowers many times but never roses before so she was quite happy bout that.Smile
We had some very good pizza in a place that had the Spurs game on big TVs (we won!)

Then while at the bookstore her best friend called--she's having boyfriend trouble and wanted my GF to go with her and "check up" on the guy's whereabouts--so they left me at the store.
I went home alone and hung out for 3 hours.

Because it was VDay I was cool about the whole thing. Being nice about having my evening ruined was my special "gift". Wink

And they say chivalry is dead...! Good on you, Keith! Big Grin
Hey ST - probably a good thing you didn't bring your camera and tripod to the cinema - your wife might have surmised where your true love really is Smile
I went out for a romantic evening, I was planning on taking her for a drink then dinner next door but saw the set valentines menu and decided to stay where we were, unfortunately I didn't notice that it was $80 per person lol
lol @ Chris.... Big Grin

Jamie: that just proves it... women have expensive tastes! Big Grin
Valentine's falling on a wednesday made for a rather unromantic evening, but I just got back from a very nice dinner-and-movie date. I did get her some nice earrings for wednesday (I have great taste in jewellery), but the first major snowstorm of the winter shut down the courier that I wanted to use to deliver them to her at work.

There's always next year...

More importantly, I have a photo of her for this thread: http://www.shuttertalk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=6981
Good to see you around Jamie.
