I thought it was pretty hilarious that Nikon posted the following "news article" on their global site.

Quote:Nikon understands that some article appeared in the media regarding Nikon's imaging product. Please note that Nikon has made no announcement in this regards.
That's the article in its entirety and I'm not sure if it could be made any vaguer... Big Grin

Anyway that was in response to rumours that Nikon will be entering the mirrorless interchangable lens camera market by launching new models today, even having a mysterious countdown page with nothing but a timer.

Here are some of the rumours:

In fact, speculation on the new models sent Nikon's share price soaring last week.

Stay tuned folks!
I love that the url is "iamcomings" – a classy effort all the way.

I like that 1001noisycameras decided to lightly mock Nikon over this, since they absolutely deserve it.

Personally, I'm hoping that Nikon will be announcing the iPhone 5.

Hey maybe then they can seek a court injunction to prevent Canon from selling cameras in certain countries.. Big Grin
From my reading:

- two interchangeable mirrorless cameras, and 3 lenses at launch:
- J1 - consumer oriented, no EVF
- V1 - with EVF and magnesium alloy construction for "enthusiasts"
- Uses a CX sensor, a 1" type sensor which is about 60% the size of a M43 sensor but 2.5x bigger than those found in high-end compacts (and even the Pentax Q system).
- Gives a 2.7x crop - the three lenses are a 28mm pancake, 28-80mm kit lens and 80-300mm equivalent.

I noticed one glaring omission - no hotshoe!

There's also a discussion here about Nikon's strategy - essentially saying that they made a smart move with the smaller sensor, as to not compete with and cannibalise the sales of the APS-C and full frame systems.

I tend to agree as well - those wanting the benefits of a full system can stick with the current line of cameras, and those currently tempted by the newfangled mirrorless systems offered by other brands will have something else to think about.
Actually I stand corrected on the "no hot shoe" comment:

There are some hands-on pictures at the launch, and the V1 apparently sports an accessory port (which I originally took to be the "concealed pop up flash" mentioned in the press release). There are some photos showing a bunch of different accessories (flash, projector, video light, large LCD viewfinder) that plug into said accessory port.

p.s. the pic of the miniscule J1 with the giant 30-110 extended almost looks laughable... Big Grin

The last fifteen years from Nikon and Canon have been defined by efforts to not undercut their existing products. It's an interesting approach, and it's both why they dominate in DSLRs and why they're so late to this new category.

An "accessory port" isn't nearly as good as a proper iso-standard hot shoe, and we have Sony to prove it.

In other news, when I checked just a few minutes ago the "coming" countdown was still running. Perhaps they're also releasing the replacement for the D300s and D700? Big Grin
Yeah not sure about the countdown, when I spotted it on dpreview earlier today, there was still 11 hours to go. Some of the other major sites still had nothing, do perhaps they jumped the gun...
