I took a day off today and went to a wildlife park...

Has the background in the first pic been altered? It looks like a painting!

Yes, I applied something that PSP9 calls "Soft Focus" to the background and foreground as well. It looks better in the original format (IMO) than in the shrunk picture.

I think the effect is similar to that of certain filters used mainly in portraits, it is softening and adding sort of a halo to things. Don't know the english term for it, sorry. "Weichzeichner" is the German word (not really sure of that either).
